World View Revives Plans for Stratospheric Balloon Passenger Flights
Arizona-based company World View is reviving plans to carry passengers into the stratosphere using balloons. The Explorer Space Capsule will carry eight passengers and two crew, providing a view of the Earth from an altitude of around 30 km, with tickets costing $50,000 per person. World View expects its first flight to take place no earlier than early 2024.
The company has been funded for its current stage of development.
The venture represents a return to World View's original plans, which were shelved in favor of uncrewed balloons carrying communications and imaging payloads into the stratosphere.
The passenger service is intended to complement suborbital flights from Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, with Hartman saying many customers of those companies will look to World View for an additional experience.
