World View keeps one of its high-altitude balloons afloat for a full 16 days
Arizona-based company World View Enterprises has kept its Stratollite® vehicle, a high-altitude balloon, in the air for a consecutive 16 days, up from its previous record of five. The aim is for the balloon to stay up for 60 days.
The Stratollite is designed to function like a satellite, without requiring a costly rocket launch to orbit. It can hover between 50,000 and 75,000 feet above the Earth's surface for two months, carrying payloads or instruments. It uses air currents to maintain its position, moving up and down to find the correct wind speed. World View is focused on providing persistence over a small area, such as a military mission, natural disasters or commercial uses.
World View hopes to finalize its product by the end of the year and launch to market by 2020.
